What NOT to Recycle at the Burwood Neighbourhood House

Because of new advances in recycling technology, there are some items that we are no longer able to take. Please read below for our updated policy on these three items.

Separated Bottle Caps

In other areas, it’s necessary to separate your bottle caps from plastic bottles before recycling them. This is because they can jam processing machines. Thankfully, our local recycling centres have shredding systems that can easily separate caps from bottles. Please return your bottles with the caps on!

Can Rings

Similarly, it was once impossible for recycling centres to properly sort the aluminum tabs on cans. These valuable pieces are now able to be recycled using regular machinery. If left on the can, they will be processed alongside the rest of the metal. Please return your cans with the tabs on!

If you already have tabs collected, we are able to take them if they are pushed inside of a can.

Blister Packs

To make a long story short—in the past, the BNH would take blister packs to local chemists and deposit them in their recycling boxes. We then learned that this affects their profits negatively. Instead, please take them directly to your chemist so they aren’t filled all at once. You can learn more about the decision here.
